Medications and Your Eyes

Certain drugs may affect your eyes and vision. Both over the counter and prescription medications can affect the eyes, causing either long term changes or temporary side effects. Common visual side effects from medication include:

  • blurred or double vision
  • reduced night vision
  • dry eyes
  • light sensitivity
  • changes in color vision
  • excessive tearing and puffy or droopy eyelids

When your doctor prescribes a medication, ask about potential side effects.

    Your Eye Health

Nutrition plays a crucial role in eye health. For example, blood carries antioxidants such as Vitamin C to the eyes to guard them against damage by sunlight and other harmful molecules. Research points to a wholesome diet and lifestyle as the best prevention for a number of slow developing, sometimes untreatable eye diseases such as age
    related macula degeneration and cataracts.

A significant contributor to all diseases of aging,
including cataracts and macula degeneration, is free
radical damage. Free radicals are unstable molecules
that steal healthy cells, destabilizing them. Their
production is accelerated by ultraviolet (UV) radiation from sunlight. No organ in your body receives as much UV radiaiton as your eyes. Antioxidants like carotenoids, Vitamin E and Vitamin C neutralize free radicals and protect cells from damage.

    To preserve your vision:

  • Wear UV blocking sunglasses
  • Wear a hat
  • Eat dark leafy greens (spinach, broccoli & Kale)
  • Eat fruits and vegetables
  • Use a well rounded nutritional supplement

    Computers and Your Vision

With the prominence of computers in today's world, a new source of visual stress has been introduced.

Prolonged use of a computer can cause:

  • tired eyes
  • headaches
  • eye focusing difficulties
  • and many other problems.

By listening to your needs, our doctors can counsel you on how to reduce these sources of stress and become more productive.
